After fifteen years of faithful service, Mr. Wayne Harmon has retired as Executive Director of the Piedmont Interstate Fair. In those years Mr. Harmon has placed the Fair on a solid financial footing and returned the event to the family oriented festival it was meant to be. Under his leadership our Fair has been awarded state awards in fourteen of the fifteen years including sweeping all of the awards offered by the SC Association of Agricultural Fairs in two of those years .During his fifteen years at the Fair, Mr. Harmon has earned the prestigious CFE (Certified Fair Executive), graduated from the Institute of Fair Management (30 hours of college credit) and served on the South Carolina Association of Fairs Board of Directors as well as many committees. He will be greatly missed.
The Piedmont Interstate Fair is honored to name our new Executive Director, Mr. Bill Michels. Mr. Michels recently retired from the Spartanburg City Police Department after twenty-six (26) years of exemplary service. Even though he was born in New York State, Mr. Michels has lived all of his adult life in Spartanburg and has been very involved in the community. He has been associated with the Fair for the past twenty years as security for the fairgrounds and volunteer for the City Police concession stand.
He is already very familiar with the day to day operation of the Fair. He is married to Mary Jane Michels, who recently retired from Spartanburg County School District Six as an elementary school librarian.
The Officers, Board and Staff have every confidence that Mr. Michels is the person uniquely qualified to lead the Piedmont Interstate Fair into the coming years for continued growth, preserving its family friendly atmosphere, and making our Fair the best fall event in Spartanburg.
Welcome Bill Michels!
